While one could position the bookcase horizontally, the assembly instructions specifically state that only one "zBoard" should touch the floor to confirm correct usage, which requires one of the horizontal boards (about 32" wide), making the unit height about 45". Therefore, the Amazon sample product image for this bookshelf that displays a horizontal layout (i.e. the longest side on the floor) is incorrect. (I had thought there might have been options to assemble it either way.) Since we purchased this for our toddler's books and stuffed animals, it is adequate.
